The Rathskeller is a really genuine German Restaurant. I am German and I know as this is quite unique and we are always eating there when we are in Victoria. The food is excellent, very German, they have German beer, etc. The sitting is quite German too, great food, great value and great establishment. All the desserts are to die for.
The food was average at best ... bratworst was too salty, peas and carrots appeared to be of the reheated frozen type, the rest was greasy and overdone. All of this would have been acceptable if the meals were in the $8 to $10 range. They were in the $16 to $20 range ... simply terrible value for mediocre food.
I would not have even recommended this to my old German grandmother.
Love the Rathskeller, love it! The potato pancakes, the rahm schnitzel, the red cabbage, mmmmmmmmm! As the Germans say, "es schmeckt!" I agree that the peas and carrots are not the finest variety, but why are you ordering peas and carrots rather than potatoes, kraut, or the absolutely divine spaetzle? I bring all my guests here, my in-laws loved it, the atmosphere is cool, and on the weekend there's an actual live accordianist. Definitely go.
I used to go to the Rathskeller when I was in my 20s with my soon to be wife. The food was excellent. I will be 60 this year. Any restaurant that can last that long has to be good. My marriage however did not go as well. I will have to try your restaurant again for old times sake.
